Project Summary


Main objective and deliverables


We will explore the structure and robustness of networks under different types of threat and degrees of decision making power for nodes in the network. These issues will be addressed in the context of specific problems in economics and ecology, as detailed below, making our proposal relevant to the design and control of complex systems in real-world contexts. The common perspective of complex networks and the formal representation of threats and decision making allow for cross-fertilization between both fields as well as for insights relevant to other contexts.


The main deliverables of the project are the following:


  1. Economics 1: A characterization of efficient network design in the face of attacks.

  2. Economics 2: A comprehensive understanding of decentralized protection strategies.

  3. Economics 3: An analysis of the robustness-contagion balance in financial networks.

  4. Ecology 1: An integrated model of arid ecosystem collapse.

  5. Ecology 2: Targeted strategies in restoration ecology, applied to desertification in Iberia.


The main questions we intend to answer are:

  1. How does the performance of networks behave under different threats, and what management protocols can be employed to enhance this performance?

  2. What are the structural features which make a network resilient (robust) given certain patterns of attack or perturbation?
